A Rich Agricultural History
A Rich Agricultural History Farming in Glenshee has deep roots, with a history that blends myth, folklore, and fact. This rugged glen was once traversed by drovers and Caterans, who moved livestock along ancient routes—some of which are now part of the Cateran Trail, a historic 64-mile circular walking route.
Historical records dating back to the 1300s describe livestock raids by armed bands of Caterans, a reflection of the harsh conditions in the Highlands at the time. In an era of cold climates, plague, and ongoing wars, livestock was a valuable commodity, often stolen or driven south to market.
Today, cattle raiding is a thing of the past, and farming has adapted to modern practices while still respecting the traditions of the land.

Sustainable Farming Practices
Rhiedorrach Estate is committed to responsible and sustainable farming, ensuring that our agricultural activities contribute to land conservation and biodiversity. We manage a small herd of Native Angus cattle, as well as Scottish Blackface and Cheviot sheep.
Our Native Angus cattle are a hardy breed, well-suited to the Glen’s climate and landscape. They have a genetically pure lineage, tracing back to the original Angus breed pre dating the modern commercial Aberdeen Angus cattle, and are known for their exceptional taste, texture, and marbling. Raised on a small-scale, pasture-based system, they support environmental balance by grazing in a way that maintains the natural ecosystem. We use a managed grazing system, rotating our cattle across the estate to help maintain healthy grasslands and create a sustainable balance between livestock and the natural environment.

Sheep Farming at Rhiedorrach
Our flocks of Scottish Blackface and Cheviot sheep are well-adapted to the challenging Highland conditions, playing an essential role in land management and conservation. These traditional breeds help maintain the natural moorland and upland pasture, supporting both biodiversity and responsible farming practices.
