Restoring the Roundel Cart Mill at Finegand Farm

Over the past year, one of the most distinctive structures at Finegand Farm has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Roundel Cart Mill—a rare example of traditional agricultural architecture—was once on the brink of collapse. Its timber frame had deteriorated beyond repair and was beginning to shift off the wall headers, leaving the building dangerously unstable and fragile.

Today, thanks to a skilled team of local craftspeople and an unwavering commitment to preserving the heritage of the estate, the building has been fully restored and is now ready for its next chapter.
This circular stone mill, with its unique conical roof and curved walls, is not only a rare visual landmark in the glen but also a meaningful piece of the estate’s working history. Rather than opt for demolition and a modern replacement, the decision to restore the Roundel reflects Rhiedorrach’s dedication to maintaining the architectural and cultural integrity of the landscape.

The project brought together an excellent team of tradespeople, and we would like to thank:
- Gaetan of Timber Design Construction
- The team at Brudon Joinery
- Brian Mackie and his team from Donside Slating
From careful dismantling of the unsafe roof structure to the meticulous reconstruction of the timber trusses and the final installation of the new stone slate roof, the process was a true collaboration of traditional skill and thoughtful restoration.
We look forward to what lies ahead for this historic building and are proud to have given it the care and attention it deserves. Projects like this are a reminder that preserving the past can go hand-in-hand with a forward-looking, sustainable future.
