Overview

The Balmoral Cairns Walk is a 9.5 km (6-mile) circular route through the woodlands and hills of the Balmoral Estate, leading to a series of historic stone cairns built by Queen Victoria. These 16 cairns commemorate significant events in British royal history, such as marriages and coronations.

The most famous is the Prince Albert Cairn, a striking granite pyramid, built in 1862 to honor Prince Albert after his death. The cairn sits at an elevated viewpoint, offering panoramic views of the Balmoral Estate and Deeside valley. Other notable cairns include Princess Alice’s Cairn, Prince Leopold’s Cairn, and the Victoria Cairn.

The trail passes through lush pine forests, open moorlands, and gentle hills, making it one of the most scenic and historically significant walks in the area.

Access Restrictions: Closed when the Royal Family is in residence (typically August – October)
